Peerless: Jennifer's look tonight at the Directors Guild Awards has no equal

Last week Angelina Jolie stole the show at the Producers Guild Awards in Beverly Hills in a stunning floor-length black gown with cut-out lace panels.

She looked so unbelievably sensational that it was hard to imagine who could look better... until now.

Step forward the woman who will forever be pitched against her erstwhile love rival, an unbelievably sexy looking Jennifer Aniston.

Voodoo princess: Jennifer Aniston looked sensational in a beaded black mini-dress and barely there shoes at the Directors Guild Of America Awards held at the Grand Ballroom at Hollywood & Highland

The 42-year-old stepped out to the Directors Guild Awards, yes directors probably do trump producers, at the Grand Ballroom at Hollywood & Highland in an beautiful beaded black minidress.

The bandeau style perfectly highlighted her dainty shoulders and toned arms, while the high hem displayed her excellently honed pins.

But the sexiest part of her lovely outfit could be found resting on the red carpet in the form of her barely there shoes, just two tiny straps set off with black toe polish - which boyfriend Justin Theroux, 40 , must surely adore.

Picture perfect: The 42-year-old was flawless even in her close up shots

Matching pair: Jennifer matched her obsidian-loving boyfriend Justin Theroux right down to her toenails

He, as usual, was clad from head-to-toe in black, and interestingly, was wearing a tie exactly like the one Jennifer's former husband Brad Pitt was sporting last week.

The 40-year-old is naturally an edgy looking and alternative leaning artist, he is - in short - what blue-eyed, blonde haired boy next door has always yearned to be.

And it's hard to believe that this hasn't in some way ruffled the father-of-six's feathers.

Black tie wars: Brad and Angelina looked incredible last week but Jennifer and Justin have scrubbed up even better

Who wore their black dress better? Angelina looks incredible but Jennifer glows in her luxurious number

It's been noted that it wasn't until Jennifer found what seems like long-lasting love with Wanderlust star and writer Therouz, that Brad made his now infamous comment to Parade magazine which seemed to suggest his life with the former Friends star was boring.

Now, in a fabulous paradox, he is talking about marrying long-term partner Angelina Jolie - who has been transformed from sex kitten to earth mother - and Jennifer is rubbishing marriage reports, raising her hem then jumping on Justin's motorbike.

Funny how life can change.

Happy: Aniston's contented love life seems to be agreeing with her

Team Angelina: Brad's best friend George Clooney was in attendance with Shailene Woodley, who plays his daughter in The Descendents

And it's curious as to whether or not Jennifer and Brad actually talk to ensure that they don't bump into each other as such events, as he and Angelina have been all over awards season.

With a first directorial effort, Land of Milk and Honey, under her super-slim belt, you'd think tonight would be a prime date in the diary for Ms Jolie.

Their great friend George Clooney, who must be extending his mantlepiece to accommodate all the awards for his performance in The Descendents, was there.

Leading ladies: Stars of The Rum Diary and The Artist Amber Heard and Berenice Bejo looked stunning in their opulent gowns

Vintage vamps: Helen Mirren and Shailene Woodley drew inspiration from eras gone by for their stunning frocks

It doesn't matter if it's black or white: Laura Dern and Missi Pyle are opposite ends of the spectrum

Aniston may have led the pack tonight, but exquisite dresses were the order of the day, with Berenice Bejo of The Artist almost matching Aniston for eye-catching elegance.

She donned a wonderful flapper style dress in black with accents of pure gold, which nodded to her timeless turn in the movie of the moment.

The Rum Diary's Amber Heard kept it simple, but effective, in a navy column dress with minimalist frills and ties.

Leading men: Kelsey Grammer and the artist's Jean Dujardin both cut a dash as they strolled up the red carpet

Vivid colours: Adding to the timeless ball theme were Heather Tom Deborah Ann Woll in red and green respectively

Britain's national treasure, Helen Mirren, looked wonderful in an opulent gold dress that harked back to the days of Jane Austen.

The Descendents Shailene Woodley, meanwhile, proved she is as promising in the fashion stakes as she is on the acting front by donning a ravishing burgundy lace dress with an Edwardian neckline that evoked the style of the 1970s.

Laura Dern opted for sequin speckled black while Missi Pyle was a picture in delicate white lace.

Super star: Michelle Williams, star of My Week of Marilyn, looked lovely in an asymmetric gown
