In difficulty: Freddie Starr was given oxygen as onsite medics gave him treatment after he suffered an allergic reaction to something during his I'm A Celebrity Bushtucker trial

Today the news broke that Freddie Starr was rushed out of the I'm A Celebrity jungle after suffering a severe allergic reaction.

And tonight saw the dramatic moment when the 68-year-old comedian was strapped up to some oxygen and as he was given emergency medical treatment.

Starr is seen gasping into a mask as he sits on a chair between the trees as onsite medics tended to him.

He was then taken to hospital and will be kept there for more tests, although it is unclear whether he plans to rejoin his camp mates.

Doctors were called to check on Starr after he started feeling sick following the Greasy Spoon Bushtucker Trial.

After the challenge was finished, he seemed ok as he walked back to camp and was in good spirits as he spoke to the cameras about the trial.

He mocked his competitor, TOWIE's Mark Wright, and laughed as he said: 'Anyone who wears a bandana and fake tan and puts cream on, they got no chance.'

But as he made his way back to camp, he turned to one of the crew and said: 'I feel a bit light-headed.'

Job done: Freddie seemed in good spirits after completing his challenge and talked to the cameras as he made his way back to camp after the trial...

... but a few moments later he struggled to walk and looked peaky as he complained of feeling unwell

He sat down and medics were called and Freddie was taken to hospital shortly afterwards.

His camp mate Fatima Whitbread was quite upset and and cried when she heard the news, saying: ‘I grew up watching him he always used to make me laugh.’

Antony Coton was less distressed and said: ‘He'll back tomorrow but life goes on’
An ITV spokesman said: 'Freddie Starr was taken unwell in the jungle. He was immediately attended to by on-site medics and taken to hospital where he was assessed by doctors.

Can you blame him for being allergic? Freddie was seen lifting stars with his teeth out of a box of maggots during an earlier trial

'He will remain in hospital overnight as a precaution, and further tests continue.

However, Freddie is in great spirits and keeping nursing staff entertained.’

Starr has well-documented problems with his heart but a show insider in Australia explained, ‘Doctors have told us that it’s highly unlikely that what’s happened is related to any pre-existing condition, cardiac or otherwise.

'They think he’s had a severe allergic reaction, but they may not be able to pinpoint the cause.

'The reaction could be due to a spider bite, he might have reacted badly to a leech or a tic, or even a snake he hadn’t noticed.

Getting used to the surroundings: Starr with his campmates Stefanie Powers and Willie Carson

'He might have reacted badly to the bark of a tree he leant on, or a leaf he touched in passing. Doctors are testing all of these things.

'The jungle is an alien environment for most of us, but the show is always prepared for all eventualities and this is no exception.

'The unpredictability of the jungle is what sets this programme apart from other shows. The element of jeopardy is always there. However, the celebs are watched 24-hours a day by a huge team of people.'

There are dozens of cameras on the celebs, as well as 24-hour security in the camp and a huge crew around them. There are also on-site medics around the clock.'

It’s thought that Freddie started to feel the effects of his allergic reaction a couple of hours after he tackled a Bush Tucker Trial called Greasy Spoon alongside Mark Wright.

Our source added, ‘The foods are all tested on people before they reach the celebrities.

‘Extreme precautions are taken and bush tucker like the cockroaches are all bred hygienically.

‘It’s unlikely that this is the cause of his reaction, but tests are continuing and we can't rule out anything.’
