Yorkshire lass: Anne Hathaway as Emma Morley in the film One Day

She was criticised for being just too pretty to take the lead role in the film version of the bestselling book One Day – now fans say Anne Hathaway’s Yorkshire accent is ‘horrible’.

The American star’s attempts at Northern tones as the character Emma Morley have also been called ‘awkward’ and ‘uncomfortable’.

A fan calling herself Britishchick wrote on one website: ‘Not good at all!!!! Totally inconsistent! Why not get an actual English woman in the role.’ Another simply added: ‘Love the book. Hate Anne’s accent.’

One Day, which will be released on August 19, is among the most eagerly awaited films of the year. Based on the runaway bestseller by David Nicholls, the film charts the ever-changing on-off relationship between Morley, a working-class girl from Yorkshire, and wealthy Dexter Mayhew, played by Jim Sturgess.

The couple first meet while students at Edinburgh University and the book catches up with them on the same day each year – July 15 – over the ensuing two decades.

Experts believe the movie will be one of the biggest hits of the year thanks to the success of the novel, which has sold more than 860,000 copies in the UK alone.

But some fans remain unconvinced about the casting of The Devil Wears Prada star in the pivotal role – indeed, originally some thought she was ‘too pretty’ to play the part of the fast-food waitress who becomes a comprehensive school teacher.

Later, the 28-year-old actress from Brooklyn, New York, admitted she was apprehensive about getting the voice right. She said: ‘I was very nervous about the Yorkshire accent.’

Now the film’s trailer has confirmed the fans’ worst fears.

One wrote: ‘There’s nothing Yorkshire about Anne Hathaway’s accent.’ Another added: ‘It sounds a generic posh English accent.’

But a film critic who has already seen the movie said that fans should not judge it by the trailer.

The reviewer said: ‘Anne has a go at the Yorkshire accent. Her attempt has its high points and its low points. But to be honest it didn’t worry me. I thought the film was a very good and a very faithful adaptation.’
