'I had to put 20lbs on for Meet Monica Velour... it was fantastic!' Kim Cattrall reveals she broke her 37-year diet for new movie as she talks to Graham Norton

Kim Cattrall has revealed she gained staggering 20lbs for her role in Meet Monica Velour, but says putting on the weight was 'fantastic'.

The 54-year-old star, who is most famous for her role as Samantha Jones on hit TV series Sex And The City, said she relished the chance to pile on the pounds by gorging on junk food.

And the movie role also meant she was able to btreak the diet she hadafter being on a diet for the past 37 years.

She told Graham Norton on his Friday night chat show: 'It was a stretch for me - literally a stretch as I had to gain 20lbs to play this character… it was fantastic!

'I have been on a diet since 1974 so this was time for me to eat. God I love to eat, chips and crisps and puddings. Oh, it was amazing!'

Meet Monica Velour, a story about an awkward teenager who makes friends with a retired porn star, played by Cattrall, has already won rave reviews after premiering at the Tribeca Film Festival earlier this year.

Different look: Kim said she loved starring in a film where she didn't have to worry about what she looked like

And Cattrall told Norton the opportunity to star in such a film was a rare one - especially as it meant she didn't have to worry too much about what she looked like.

She said: 'I had no make up on and my hair was just as I got out of bed.

'I am known so much for looking just one way - that sort of Barbie doll perfection look that Sex and the City promotes.

'So it was fantastic for me to get to play a real person.'

Cattrall, who reprised her role as PR guru Samantha for the two Sex And The City movies, also said it has been hard for her to move away from the character she is best-known for.

She admitted: 'It’s hard. People think you are that character and it follows you.
'I tell people "You have seen Samantha nude, not me nude." '

Cattrall appears on The Graham Norton Show alongside Jessie Wallace and comedian Lee Mack, as well as The Saturdays, who perform their new single Notorious.
