Had enough: Samantha Womack, seen here shopping near her north London home this weekend, has attacked EastEnders for her 'living hell'

She denied that she had quit EastEnders over the controversial cot death storyline.

But today Samantha Womack hit out at bosses of the BBC soap and said she had been plunged into a 'living hell'.

According to a friend the actress wants to leave the show immediately, after a storm of controversy

Speaking to the News of the World, the friend said the actress told her: ' I want out of this show now. What they've done has disgusted me. The storyline is sick.'

And she added that she felt like it was ruining her life and she wished she could leave tomorrow and never look back.

Almost 9,000 viewers have complained about the harrowing drama and Womack has been verbally abused by people on the street.

Her friend added: 'Sam's had it with the BBC now. She did think about walking off the set and never coming back but that's not how she operates.

Stressed: Womack looked tired and drawn as she left the shops and dashed to the safety of her home

'Nevertheless, she's been plunged into a living hell by this. Some viewers can't separate fact from fiction. She doesn't even want to leave the house.'

The storyline was originally expected to run until the end of this year, but executive producer Bryan Kirkwood has been forced to re-write scripts to bring it to a 'warm and tender' conclusion at Easter.

Ideas of how to end the controversial plot include Kat Moon, played by Jessie Wallace, overhearing Ronnie apologise to dead baby James at the graveside, or a policeman catches the same confession and puts two and two together.

Another is that Ronnie's mother Glenda, played by Glynis Barber, gets suspicious after seeing her daughter light a candle for James in the church.

But Kirkwood is said to be unhappy about having to re-write scenes and end the storyline earlier than he wanted.

Kirkwood, who used to produce Channel 4's teen soap Hollyoaks, was hired by the BBC to bring some comedy and fun to EastEnders.

But an insider said: 'The show's in meltdown. Bryan isn't happy at all because he's been forced to rewrite the baby stuff.

'He believes he should be left alone to run the show. He doesn't like all the senior executives interfering. And now he faces revolt from some senior stars, angry at Samantha's going.'

I'm sorry: The storyline could be concluded with a graveside confession by Ronnie - which is overheard by Kat Moon
