Heartbroken: Dougie Poynter, seen here with former love Frankie Sandford in September, is in rehab after struggling to get over their split

McFly have confirmed that bassist Dougie Poynter has been in the Priory for the last four weeks as he struggles to get over this split with The Saturday's Frankie Sandford.

Dougie, 23, is said to have been left devastated after he was dumped by Frankie, 22, in November just as they were in the process of buying a new house together and moving from the North London flat they shared.

She is now dating footballer Wayne Bridge, 30. She and Wayne were first seen together in the New Year, but talking last week, the singer said she 'couldn't remember' when they got together.

Talking to More! magazine last week, Frankie said: 'To be honest, I'm really not sure how long we've been together, it's all been such a whirlwind...'

It only rubbed salt into poor Dougie's wounds to see his former sweetheart move on so quickly.

Frankie and Dougie meanwhile got together in January 2009. They split in March last year but reunited a few weeks later when they couldn't bear to be apart.

Talking in January about their recent split, Dougie said: 'Of course I was gutted about the break-up. It was totally unexpected and I really thought things were going well between us. It was bad timing just before Christmas too.

'I didn't fit in with The Saturdays and JLS crowd and party scene anyway.'

A source told the News Of The World that Dougie had gone into rehab as he was 'struggling to get through the day.'

'He's in rehab': McFly's lead singer Tom Fletcher confirmed the news on his Twitter account today

The friend said: 'He's been in there working hard on getting his head straight. He's not had a phone of been in touch with any of the band.

'But they're backing him all the way and hoping he comes out a far happier person.'

Writing on his Twitter today, lead singer Tom Fletcher confirmed his bandmate was in rehab, but told fans: 'Please don't worry.

'He's just been having a tough time lately and needed a few weeks rest so he's fighting fit and ready to slap that bass for you on tour.'

Dougie meanwhile hasn't posted on his Twitter page since February 14.

The Priory, which has a number of locations around the UK, is one of the country's leading private clinics dealing with mental health issues, as well as treating addictions, and offers psychological and psychiatric services.

Once Dougie is feeling better, McFly's UK tour to promote new album Above The Noise is now scheduled to kick off on March 18 at the Sheffield Arena.
