Final episode: Stacey Branning (Lacey Turner) finally bowed out of EastEnders tonight in one of the show's most dramatic episodes

Stacey Branning finally bowed out of EastEnders tonight in one of the show's most dramatic episodes which saw the character turn down both Ryan Malloy and Max Branning before leaving with her daughter Lily.

The tense scenes also saw love rival Janine stab herself and attempt to convince the police and her family that Stacey, played by Lacey turner, had tried to kill her.

The drama unfolded after Albert Square's residents reacted to Janine's announcement that Stacey had murdered Archie Mitchell last year.

'What have you done to me?' Janine stabs herself as a shocked Stacey looks on

Stacey first confessed the truth to her disgusted mother Jean who told her, ' You are capable of this. I feel like I don't really know you any more.'

Jean then refused to leave Lily with her while she went to the Queen Victoria pub, admitting that she didn't think she'd be safe.

Across the Square, Janine begged husband Ryan not to leave her for Stacey.

'She's a murderer,' she said. 'She killed a man in cold blood and then let her husband take the blame.'

However Ryan told Janine he didn't love her and left her crying in a heap on the floor.

An enraged Janine then paid Stacey a visit and begged her to confess all to the police.

When Stacey refused her demands, Janine stabbed herself in the hand and told Stacey she would tell the police that she had tried to kill her.

The scenes led to Stacey returning to the rooftop which her husband Bradley fell from last year and contemplating taking her own life.

Bradley's father Max raced up to the roof and convinced a terrified Stacey to come down, insisting that he would fix everything and help her escape.

Stacey then returned home and persuaded Jean that she had not stabbed Janine. But Jean had already called the police after believing Janine's lies.

The terrified young mother then left Ryan devastated when she told him she didn't really love him.

Ryan let Stacey go, but as she raced away with Max she was confronted by Archie's daughters Roxy and Ronnie who forced her to reveal whether she had killed their father.

Stacey told the sisters the truth but the pair also decided to let her escape.

Stacey then fled in a car with Max, who drove her and daughter Lily to the airport as police cars arrived at the scene.

But the drama wasn't over for Stacey, as Max also confessed his love for her and offered to leave with her.

Viewers were left wondering whether the couple, who had an affair during Stacey's marriage to Bradley, would ride off into the sunset together.

But it wasn't to be, Stacey told Max that she didn't love him and was still in love with Bradley.

She was last seen onboard a plane cuddling daughter Lily while looking out of the window sadly.

The instrumental 'Julia's theme', used when a big character leaves the Square alive, was then played as the camera concentrated on the bright lights of the city.

Janine had earlier being taken into an ambulance, and was seen calling out to husband Ryan, who refused to go anywhere near her.

Lacey, 22, who has played Stacey for six years, announced in April that she wanted to leave the soap but the scripts containing her exit have remained a closely guarded secret.

'Take my hand': Max convinces Stacey to come down from the rooftop

She was revealed as the murderer of Archie Mitchell in the February live episode of the soap to celebrate its 25th anniversary.

Watched by more than 16.6 million viewers, it saw her husband Bradley fall to his death immediately before Stacey's confession that she murdered Archie Mitchell.

He had been the prime suspect after Stacey revealed that Mitchell had raped her.

It's been known for weeks that Stacey is set to leave Walford at Christmas.

North London-born actress landed the role of the then Miss Slater the day after leaving school and made her onscreen debut in 1 November 2004.

Since then, she's won some a string of best actress awards for her portrayal of Stacey - 28 in the past five years - who viewers have seen grow from a troubled teen to equally troubled young woman.

When she announced she was leaving, she said: 'I'll miss Stacey and everyone in Albert Square very much but the time has come to try something different.'
